Clinical features of Rubeola infection

Over the past two years there has been a marked increase in measles cases admitted to the authors' Infectious Disease Clinic. In 1994 and 1995 spring, a total number of 45 patients aged between 14 and 35 years (19+4), were identified as having measles by a physician and with spesific serological methods. It was found that rubeola virus spesific immunglobulin M (IgM) was detectable early after the onset of disease in all cases. Characteristic symptoms of measles appeared in most of the patients. Numerous complications have been associated with measles including bronchitis (31.1%), pneumonia (8.9%), otitis media (4.4%), hemorrhagic rash (4.4%), meningoencephalomyelitis (2.2%), and keratitis (2.2%). Hepatic dysfunction in measles (82.2%) was frequent. The extent of hepatic involvement was evaluated by determining AST (84+35), ALT (67+27), gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (69±23), and lactic dehydrogenase (840+236) activities. Two patients were identified as having measles as a nosocomial infection, during their hospitalization with the diagnosis of acute viral hepati-tis. In conclusion, it was noted that subclinical hepatitis was a quite common complication of measles in young population which was recognized in recent years. This process was probably self-limited and carried no long term effects and normalized after two to four weeks.
