lmmunity and vaccination in chicken coccidiosis
Coccidiosis is a protozoer disease of chicken that causes significant economic losses. The toxic effects of drugs used in the treatment of disease and the emergence of drug-resistant strains of Eimeria have urged development of alternative control strategies. For this reason, live virulent vaccines, live attenuated vaccines, anti-idiotype antibody vaccines and recombinant antigen vaccines have been developed. The failure to obtain satisfactory results with live virulent vaccine has led the researchers to consider attenuated coccidia oocysts for vaccination. Jeffers reported that repeated selection of Eimeria tenella oocysts has resulted in the production of strains called "Precocious lines". Subsequently, precocious lines of eight Eimeria strains which include two different strains of Eimeria maxima have been produced at Houghton laboratory in England. Paracox, a live virulent vaccine, which comprises all the species has successfully been used in the control of coccidiosis. Both cellular and humoral immunity develop against coccidiosis. The role of antibody in the protection is largely unknown.
