Potential Use of an Electronic Nose in the Assessment of Odor Problems in Livestock Housing
In this study it was aimed to modify an electronic nose (e-nose) system that was initially developed to purge air sample from a container and not mobile. In its current mobile version it can still be used in laboratory. The mobile e-nose system consists of 10 metal-oxide gas sensors and a temperature/humidity sensor. The gas sensors are sensitive to major odorous gases generated from livestock operations. A small scale dairy operation with 24-head cattle housed in a tie-stall barn and outside manure storage area were the main sources of odor. The modified e-nose system was used to collect and store air quality data considering the wind direction. It was observed that of those 10 gas sensors 6 were capable of detecting changes in air quality in terms of odor nuisance. It was able to visualize the odor intensity depending on the wind direction and locations of odor sources over the land.
